Archival searches for transient optical emission in the error box
We present here the results of a study carried out at the Harvard College Observatory Plate Collection. We examined 3995 plates covering the error box of the gamma-ray burst GRB 910122, over a time span of 90 yr (from 1889 to 1979). The total exposure time is ∼ 0.55 yr. No convincing evidence of optical transient emission was found within the GRB 910122 IPN error box. However, a possible OT was...
متن کاملSolar Neutrinos as Background in Direct Dark Matter Searches
The coherent contribution of all neutrons in neutrino nucleus scattering due to the neutral current is examined considering the boron solar neutrinos. These neutrinos could potentially become a source of background in the future dark matter searches aiming at nucleon cross sections in the region well below the 10−10pb, i.e a few events per ton per year.
متن کاملThe Incidence of Dwarf Novae in Large Area Transient Searches
Understanding and quantifying the contribution of known classes of transient and variable sources is an important lesson to be learned from the manifold of precursor programs of the near-future large synoptic sky survey programs such as SkyMapper, Pan-STARRS, and LSST. With this goal in mind, we undertook photometric and spectroscopic follow-up observations of four recently reported unidentifie...
متن کاملTransient chaos in optical metamaterials.
We investigate the dynamics of light rays in two classes of optical metamaterial systems: (1) time-dependent system with a volcano-shaped, inhomogeneous and isotropic refractive-index distribution, subject to external electromagnetic perturbations and (2) time-independent system consisting of three overlapping or non-overlapping refractive-index distributions. Utilizing a mechanical-optical ana...
متن کاملProspects for Stochastic Background Searches Using Virgo and LSC Interferometers
We consider the question of cross-correlation measurements using Virgo and the LSC Interferometers (LIGO Livingston, LIGO Hanford, and GEO600) to search for a stochastic gravitational-wave background. We find that inclusion of Virgo into the network will substantially improve the sensitivity to correlations above 200Hz if all detectors are operating at their design sensitivity. This is illustra...
